Team

Our research team collaborates to understand the intellectual dynamics of premodern Islamic epistemic cultures, with a focus on polymathy and interdisciplinarity.

Islam Dayeh, Principal Investigator of the project, leads research on the pedagogies, scholarly practices, and institutional frameworks that fostered disciplinary integration in the premodern Islamic world.

Colinda Lindermann is a postdoctoral researcher in the KNOW research project. Her work focuses on the impact of language and Arabic technical terminology on the integration and development of knowledge disciplines in the post-formative period.

Elmozfar (Kotoz) Ahmed is a postdoctoral researcher in the KNOW research project. His research explores the educational and institutional processes that shaped the unique expertise of the muḥtasib—an expert-polymathic figure responsible for supervising social and economic life in premodern Muslim cities.

Ali Abdallatif is a doctoral researcher in the KNOW research project. His research examines the intersections of Arabic grammar, Islamic legal theory, and exegesis in the works of Najm al-Dīn al-Ṭūfī (d. 716/1316).

Samer Rashwani is a professor at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Doha and an associate member of the KNOW research project. His research explores the critical role of commentaries and glosses in the development and integration of scholarly disciplines.
